We live in a world that is hugely dominated by technology. This can be a great blessing in our lives or it can become a curse.
Technology A Curse:
One of the major downfalls of technology is that it encourages you and I to engage in more multi-tasking than we have ever before dared to attempt.
With all of the latest devices at our fingertips we can hold various conversations at once via chat, cell phone, twitter and facebook etc.
But here’s the downside: Brain scientists are telling us that multi-tasking is damaging yours and my intelligence. (Did you read the article “Knowledge is increasing, intelligence is decreasing”?)
150 years ago brain scientists predicted that we would enter a dark ages of intelligence by the year 2020. You only have to read constant flow of articles that are being written by concerned parents and teachers about the school systems and the lack of student’s progress in their learning to realize that we are on track to see this happen.
So what is the real curse here?
- There are more things to distract you and I from our true course in life (our goals, dreams and why).
- The personal touch is getting lost in the world of technology! (This is huge).
There is one major key to solve this dilemma:
Technology A Blessing:
The key to making sure that your electronic devices are serving YOU (and not visa versa) is FOCUS.
When you have discovered your why and you are determined to stay focused on your daily goals and dreams then it will be easier to resist distractions in your life. Now you can dominate the material world (including electronic devices) instead of it dominating you.
For example:
Here is one way that my cell phone serves me. I recently spent some time searching for books online in html format, and found a lot of out of public domain classics such as Think and Grow Rich, As A Man Thinketh, Andrew Murray’s Books (classic Christian author from early 1900s) and a host of other great classic motivational and inspirational books.
Then I looked for these sites on my cellphone and bookmarked them.
To my delight I found that I can easily read these books online on my cellphone. The font is a decent size and the screen shows enough of the page to read the book quickly yet thoroughly.
Now I have a library of motivational and inspirational books that goes with me wherever I am (and they don’t weigh anything!) This means that time riding the bus, waiting on appointments etc is now turned into productive time.
When technology is your servant you will find lots of creative ways to use it to increase the quality and effectiveness of your life.
