15 May 2010 How I Finally Got My Brain To React

Newspaper report on accidentA recent statement that Mike Murdock wrote in an email reminded me again of the journey of recovery I went through after a severe accident in Mexico. This journey took me to prove Mike’s statement for myself:

God gave you a mouth to
conquer your mind

The local newspapers reported this event as a miracle, and it certainly was, (and no I am not an American, but the car was.)

The biggest miracle:
What impacted me the most was that it happened on a road that is normally full of traffic, mostly heavy trucks. Yet as the car was swerving out of control back and forth across the road before it rolled, there was not a car in sight!!

Both the Green Cross and the Red Cross were called in which meant that the police had deemed the situation as life threatening and serious.

When the Red Cross arrived, they could not believe seeing me sitting up with no blood flowing. Both ears and the side of my face were fully and deeply bruised, a deep scratch on my arm from climbing out of the car, but that was all.

AccidentI was released by the Red Cross, and so I thought I was fine.

Back to “normal”
Once I got back home I continued to work as normal. At least I tried to continue as “normal”, but something was not right. My concentration was gone, and I was not reacting right.

Finally I called a friend and described what was happening to me and he replied: “That is a light concussion. It will take a couple of years to recover fully from that”.

I did not want to hear that, but at least I knew what I was fighting. Still I could not get my brain to work. I just could not concentrate, nor react as I used to.

Finally, I managed to face the fact that I could not do any work that required tedious concentration (such as programming, building websites or Forex).

An Amazing Discovery:
One day I started to talk to myself out loud. (No I did not answer myself back :)

To my amazement my brain started to react. I discovered that instead of simply trying to think things through and plan in my mind, if I spoke my plans out loud, my brain became clearer and could react.

So I began to speak out to myself, with step by step instructions. My mind reacted to my own voice and it obeyed! What a difference. I was ABLE to take action, and I did!

That was the next step to a full recovery.

What was the key? It is what some call “self talk”. It may sound a little strange at first, but I proved the statement Mike Murdock declared be true.

God gave you a mouth to conquer your mind.

When things get tough and negative forces try to direct your mind:

  • Speak out your plans, your goals and your dreams.
  • Speak out your affirmations every day.
When you start to speak to yourself, your mind WILL respond.

This is a major key to being able to:

** Train your brain for success … and
** Overcome the negative forces that come against your mind.

What is that key again?

Self-talk. Let your mouth dominate your mind.

JillIf you have not already tried “self talk”, why not start today? You just may be rather amazed!

26 Apr 2010 To Give Up Is Not An Option

The people who win are those who do not stop. Nikki Stone.

When I first went down to Mexico one of the comments I heard a lot among the other missionaries was that a high percentage gave up within their first five years. That meant that those did not give up were by default considered to be successful and became the leaders.

When you first set out on your journey towards your dreams and goals, everything is new and exciting. Then comes the hard work and the inevitable obstacles. The novelty wears off and the daily discipline and work may become difficult.

That is if you allow your vision to become dim.

When the obstacles start appearing is when your vision needs to be the strongest. How do you make sure of that? By strengthening your vision (your dream or your why) very day with your words and vision board?

I know that even during the difficult times on the mission field when I sometimes almost wanted to give up, I could not. The vision was too strong to give up.

The biggest key to success is:
Don’t ever give up.

I am sure you have heard the quote:

When the going gets tough, the tough get going.

When Turtles FlyI was listening to John Di Lemme interviewing Nikki Stone this evening. Nikki is a gold medalist in the Olympic Games. The incredible story of her struggles and triumph can be found in her new book – When Turtles Fly (see below).

Remember Thomas Edison? How many attempts did he make before finally succeeding with his invention of the light bulb? What was the key to his success? He never gave up.

Remember Abraham Lincoln.
Look at the list of failures he faced.
*1831 – Failed in business
1832 – Defeated for legislature
1833 – Again failed in business
1834 – Elected to legislature
1835 – Sweetheart died
1836 – Had a nervous breakdown
1838 – Defeated for speaker
1840 – Defeated for elector
1843 – Defeated for Congress
1846 – Elected for Congress
1848 – Defeated for Congress
1855 – Defeated for Senate
1856 – Defeated for Vice-President
1858 – Defeated for Senate
1860 – ELECTED PRESIDENT

What did Abraham Lincoln have to say about failure?

“My great concern is not whether you have failed, but whether you are content with your failure.” – Abraham Lincoln

The person who becomes content with their failure is the one who gives up.

But I know that is not you – you are a champion.

JillWhen things become difficult for you, remember – don’t ever give up. Your breakthrough to success may be just one step away.
