Spring is always a good time to regroup and re-plan (or redraw) for the rest of the year. This goes right along with the normal spring cleaning we tend to do once the colder months have past. That is, if you live in the northern hemisphere.
It is astounding just how quickly papers (coming in from snail mail) can mount up if you don’t keep on top of them.
It is just as astounding how many extra little activities you can pick up in just a few weeks if you are not careful right? They may all be good ones too. But often you have to let go of the good to leave time for the best.
The wisest man who ever lived did say that there is a time for everything (which is the theme of the book of Ecclesiastes in the Bible).
Sometimes you may have to let go of some activities, even just for a time, in order to allow time to focus on something that may be more important right now. There are seasons in our lives.
The other day Chris Brogan wrote what was for me a very timely blog post which he called What Goes Into Redrawing. All of Chris’s writings are excellent (have you read the book Trust Agents which Chris wrote together with Julien Smith) – (Amazon affiliate link).
Regrouping and Pruning
The process of regrouping is rather like pruning. The dead wood needs to be cut off so that the plant or shrub is free to grow new shoots.
It is not always just the dying branches that are pruned.
I know that when you prune roses there is not much left after the work is done. Even the healthy branches are clipped back. But the more a rose is clipped back, the better it grows.
Questions that may help you to decide what you may need to prune out of your life. What stood out the most for me in the blog post about redrawing were some questions that Chris listed as being helpful in “redrawing” (or regrouping).
Here they are:
* Does this make me happy?
* Who am I doing this for?
* Does this add to my primary goals?
* Where am I? Is this where I want to be?
* If I stop doing this, what really happens?
* What would be totally fun? Can I feed my family doing that?
* What would my ideal day look like?
* How many airplanes do I really want to be on in a given year?
(You can read Chris’s complete blog post here).
Today Gary Vaynerchuk sent out a video where he explains that he also is at a pruning time in his life. It is a great video. (You can watch it here).
I am sure that you are doing at least a little spring cleaning (if you are living in the upper hemisphere of the world).
Why not consider taking a fresh look at your goals and your daily schedule also? Perhaps some of the questions mentioned above will help you to evaluate what you are doing.
The key is to stop and re-evaluate from time to time to make sure that what you are doing is moving you towards reaching your dreams and goals.
